My wife and I are decent environmentalists. We live close to work, we recycle, we conserve water, and we don't crank our AC or heat all the time. But we don't, and never have, composted.
But we might start soon.
We saw a message on our neighborhood listserve about a start-up business that makes it a little easier. On a weekly or monthly basis, they'll come pick up your compostable materials in exchange for nice, rich soil. It's a small fee, and I'm sure the soil you get in return is not equal in mass to what you contributed. But the true benefit is it removes the work of managing the compost pile on your own -- checking on worms (don't you have to do that?), keeping rats out (a real problem as our neighbor found out), churning it frequently enough, the smell (let's be honest). It simplifies the process for us, for composting frankly has intimidated us in the past.
I hope the business succeeds. In fact, I wonder how soon it'll be before the City or County of Durham hears about it and starts collecting compostable material, just like it collects trash, and recycling, and yard waste.
Hopefully it will further prove the old mantra that a great business is one that provides a solution.
